Chapter Twenty-Four
Baker
âI canât find any of my socks.â
Holt pointed toward his bedroom with his head. âYou can wear some of mine.â
I folded my arms across my chest. âMy clothes seem to be disappearing.â
He shrugged. âThink the washing machine ate them?â
I narrowed my eyes at him. âWhy are you always so keen to do the laundry?â
âI can stop if you want.â
He turned his attention back to the book he was reading. No. I absolutely didnât want him to stop. But his loungewear wardrobe was quickly turning into mine.
âYouâre staring,â he said without looking up.
I closed the distance between us and removed the book from his hands and flipped it over before setting it on the coffee table. I straddled his lap and planted my hands on his shoulders.
He skated his fingertips up my bare thighs. I shivered. âArenât you supposed to be at work?â
âI told Ed I was leaving at six.â
âSo you can work on the bathroom?â I asked hopefully.
He frowned. âSo we could talk about plans for the garage.â
I motioned toward the book. âI thought you might have been reading about how to remodel.â
âI donât need one of those.â
âYou sure? Kinda seems like youâre putting off fixing that shower.â
âWhen have I had time to work on it?â He kissed the tip of my nose. âMaybe this weekend we can do it. Though Edâs already warned me that Iâve got to be at the shop on Saturday.â
âI was going to see if Trish needed any help with the truck anyway.â
âDonât forget Sunday dinner.â
âWeâre going?â
âYeah. Oh, and Dadâs coming over tomorrow night.â
âAre you going to tell him about Marlow?â
He dropped his forehead to mine. âIâm going to try. Will you be here?â
I clasped his face in my hands. âYou donât have to ask.â
âThanks.â He pulled me closer to him. âNow go get some socks before your feet freeze.â
âI notice you didnât mention anything about sweatpants.â
Holtâs grin was as cocky as Iâd ever seen. âIf you put those on, itâs harder to do this.â He swiped his finger between my legs, and I gasped.
âYou like a challenge.â
I jumped off his lap and scampered to the bedroom.
âHow am I supposed to concentrate on forestry now?â he called.
âWhere are your sweatshirts?â I yelled back.
âIâll never tell.â
I laughed as I rummaged through his drawers. In the top one, I found a worn pair of his sweats and slipped them on. But there was only one sock, so I ransacked through the whole chest. I put on a Forestry Service sweatshirt and moved my search to the closet.
Only a few shirts hung in it. A half full laundry basket sat on the floor. Everything in it was his.
The only place left to look was a duffle bag in the back corner. Tucked inside were Holtâs park ranger uniforms, but still no socks.
âAre there any in the dryer?â I called, digging farther into the bag.
Paper crinkled under my fingers. I removed a sweater and pair of pants, revealing a newspaper article and a photo lying in the bottom.
Pain struck me.
